What are braces?

Traditional braces are typically made of metal and are fitted to the front-facing side of your teeth. Lingual braces are also available, which are similar to normal braces with the distinction of them being fitted to the backside of your teeth, making them significantly less visible.

Pros:

  • Braces are suitable for all orthodontic treatments, regardless of the misalignment and complexity of the case.

  • Braces are fitted to your teeth and do not need to be removed when drinking or eating. This means no lost aligners and consistent results.

  • Advancements in braces, with ceramic braces and clear braces being less noticeable, and lingual braces being virtually invisible, make them a reliable option that is more aesthetically pleasing.

  • Treatment times can be shorter.

Cons:

  • As they're more visible which some people do not like.

  • Extra care is needed when brushing and flossing.

  • More regular consultations with the dentist.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces and are made of clear plastic. 3D scanning technology is used to map out your mouth and aligners are made to gradually shift and correct your teeth.

Pros:

  • Invisalign is virtually invisible.

  • They can be removed, making it easier to eat, drink and brush your teeth.

  • Fewer consultations with your dentist.

  • Even though most people adjust to having traditional braces quickly, Invisalign clear aligners are more comfortable from the get-go.

Cons:

  • Not suitable for all orthodontic treatments (your dentist will advise you if this is the case)

  • They must be removed when eating or drinking anything other than water. This means they are more susceptible to being lost or damaged.

  • You must wear them for at least 20 hours per day.

  • You must brush your teeth and floss before refitting them after eating.

What can be treated?

Braces or Invisalign are often associated with cosmetic dentistry and straightening your smile. However, they are also used to correct a number of issues that may be affecting your speech, how you eat and more. Using braces and/or Invisalign, your dentist will be able to assist you with correcting the following conditions in addition to helping you achieve the smile you want:

  • Underbite/overbite: This is when one of the jaws extends too far over the other

  • Crossbite: The upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth

  • Crowding: The teeth do not have enough room to erupt

  • Spacing: There is too much room between teeth

  • Front teeth protrusion: The front teeth do not mate correctly as the upper teeth extend too far or the lower teeth do not extend far enough

During your consultation, your dentist will review your oral health, assess any conditions you may have and discuss your options with you.
